Death Notices, Records Broken, and Wolves

Over the last week, we have experienced hot summer weather, crazy busy days as we broke records twice for the number of people served for one day in our restaurant, (big thank you to the kitchen staff for bearing up under the heat and the volume and the patience of our customers.)  Record rainfall for one day as Stratford saw the most rain Thursday with 60 millimetres, or near 2.5 inches falling. Charlottetown set a new record for Aug. 9 with 34.4 millimetres, beating the old mark of 18.5 millimetres set in 1951. And we even had hail yesterday. This was a week for the record books.

A lot of transplanted Islanders come home for Old Home Week this coming week, and I hope record visitors head out to the festivities and may record pace times occur at the track as well.

Islanders of all walks know that death is big news on P.E.I., so when the Summerside local daily newspaper, Journal Pioneer publishes an edition without any obituaries people notice. Twitter went fluttering as people all over the world were interested in this story. In its Aug. 9 edition, the 153-year-old Journal Pioneer carried no obituaries in its pages. Read More here.

I am intrigued and hope I could carve out some time this weekend and head over to The Victoria Literary Festival, now in its sixth year and takes place from August 10 to Aug. 12. The festival aims to attract writers of all levels, including those who are simply thinking about writing and or literature. No prior experience is necessary, and it’s for all ages. Head on over to Island Chocolates in Victoria-by-the-Sea and sign-up for the workshops or buy tickets at the door. The workshops are $15, while the evening review is $20. There is also a short story contest with a $500 grand prize and publication.

Writing this blog consistently now for some time has set the mental wheels in motion as to whether I wish to write more. It intrigues me as to how writers think.

Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit. E. E. Cummings

Is there something that intrigues you and you have yet to attempt? I have discovered that are two forces at work and one is opposed to the other. Desire versus Doubt. Light versus Dark. Love versus Fear. One says, attempt this and your joy increases from trying and learning and the other voice says, "you can't do it, what will others think, you don't have time, etc."

Reminds me a parable from our indigenous cousins.

One evening, an elderly native chief told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other wolf is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked, ‘Grandpa, which wolf wins?’

The wise grandfather simply replied, ‘The one that you feed.’

This week which wolf will YOU feed?

Have a great week and take care of each other!

With love from Prince Edward Island

Sincerely,

Bruce

Saturday blog as usual ~ informative and newsy. Interesting to learn of that recent rainfall on PEI~ that could fill a bunch of sprinkling cans! We visited your store one year ago while on vacation – it was very hot and very dry then…..now you’ve had a needed rain ~ that’s good.

Also something must have happened to the link for our e-mail address (as above) to receive Bruce’s Blog automatically on Saturday – for the last several times I have had to search it out – once it arrived in the SPAM – now I have to actually go to your site to find it. Can you pls re-enter as above. Thank you and as always enjoy reading your blog.
